Andy Warhol<\/strong>\u2019s Campbell\u2019s Soup Cans are perhaps the most well-known images of modern American art.<\/p>\n

Warhol<\/strong>\u00a0appropriated familiar images from consumer culture and mass media.\u00a0When the paintings of Campbell\u2019s Soup Cans were first exhibited in 1962, they were displayed together like products at a grocery store.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n

After completing Campbell\u2019s Soup Cans paintings,\u00a0Warhol<\/strong>\u00a0turned to screenprint.\u00a0The printmaking technique initially invented for commercial use would link his art-making methods more closely to those of advertisements.\u00a0<\/div>\n

His famous words summarize his motivation:\u00a0“I want to be a machine.”<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The screenprint portfolios Campbell\u2019s Soup Cans I and Campbell\u2019s Soup Cans II were created in 1968 and 1969. Each portfolio contains ten screenprints and corresponds with the paintings. These prints are\u00a0Andy Warhol<\/strong>\u2019s most uniform and mechanical images ever produced, and this type of printmaking became his signature medium soon.<\/div>\n

The work introduced today from the private sales is “Vegetarian Vegetable, from Campbell’s Soup II.” The letters “ABC” and a balloon saying “THE ALPHABET SOUP” added more pop to this piece than other soup cans.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
